CALCULUS AB

This course will be devoted to investigating the Calculus AB syllabus along with current calculus reform materials that utilize technology in a balanced program of reasoning, connections, and communications. All topics in the Calculus AB Teacher's Guide will be addressed with considerable attention to Slope Fields. Participants will work on a packet of activities and labs for ready use in their own classroom. The TI-83-84 Plus (or Silver Edition) will be used.

Topics to be presented include: 

  • Multiple Representation of Functions
  • Derivative and Applications
  • Implicit Differentiation
  • Intermediate Value Theorem
  • Mean Value Theorem
  • Fundamental Theorem of the Calculus
  • Applications of the Definite Integral
    • Area
    • Volume
  • Differential Equations
  • Slope Fields
  • Free Response Questions from past exams
  • Post Exam Project

Sister Alice Hess, IHM

Sister Alice, I.H.M.,
has taught Calculus for over 30 years, currently at Archbishop Ryan H. S., Philadelphia. A national Presidential Awardee, a Tandy Technology Scholar, and a two-time Mary Dolciani Scholarship recipient, she has published numerous articles in professional journals and has conducted in-service presentations nationwide on subjects ranging from algebra to calculus. She is a certified National T3 Instructor, has served as an AP Calculus Table Leader and College Board Consultant, is currently an AP Statistics Reader and has assumed a leadership role in developing mathematics curriculum for the Philadelphia Archdiocese as well as incorporating technology into the mathematics classroom. Most recently Sister Hess was honored as OUTSTANDING MATHEMATICS Teacher by the Institute for Operations Research and the Management Sciences at their national conference, named one of the top 20 educators in the nation by USA Today and is one of five nationally chosen by the U.S. Department of Education to receive the 2008 American Star of Teaching Award. She was awarded an Honorary Doctorate in Human Affairs by Holy Family University.
